Conditions made for a tough race on Wednesday night. Riders were faced with a strong head wind for the first half of the twenty five mile time trial. Unfortunately for the riders the wind started to subside before the homeward section, preventing riders from taking full advantage of the expected tail wind.

First was Ross Laidlaw In one hour twenty seconds. Second was Steven Lowes in one hour two minutes and twenty seconds. Third went to Ian Pearson in one hour two minutes and thirty seconds. Riders will be hoping for better conditions next week for the penultimate twenty five of the season.

The race starts the starts at 7pm at Torwoodlee one mile north of Galashiels.

Wet roads fail to dampen Gala riders

Ten Gala riders braved extremely wet conditions to take part in a club twenty five mile time trial last Thursday evening.  Despite very wet conditions fast times were recorded by several riders. Fastest on the night was Graeme Lawrie who posted a time of fifty nine minutes and fifty five seconds. Ian Pearson took second place in one hour forty eight seconds. In third place was Steven Lowes with one hour one minute and fifteen seconds. Other times

Gala 10 mile Time trial

 Last week saw the second ten mile time trial in two weeks. Less than perfect conditions meant slower times than in the previous race for most. One of the exceptions was Graeme Lawrie took the first place in a time of twenty three minutes and twenty seven seconds eleven seconds faster than the previous week. Ian Pearson was second matching his previous week’s time at twenty three minutes and forty two seconds. Steven Lowes continued his excellent form to take third in twenty four minutes and four seconds. Other times

4th Alistair Meikle 24:11, 5th Bill Lowes 24:40, 6th David Johnston 25:25, 7th Scot Purves 25:49, 8th Bill Hamilton 25:52, 9th Andrea Pogson 26:52.

  

This week’s race will be a twenty five mile time trial starting at Torwoodlee just north of Galashiels. The race will be held on Thursday the 1st of July to avoid

clashing with the Torwoodlee ride out. The race will start at 7pm.

A truly exceptional 10

 

Last Wednesday’s club race, a ten mile time trial saw some exceptional performances from the clubs riders.  With no fewer than four riders breaking twenty four minutes on the Melrose by pass course. Mild temperatures and a light south easterly wind made for ideal racing conditions. Two riders tied for first place with Graham Lawrie and Steven Lowes both storming round the course in twenty three minutes and thirty eight seconds.  Remarkably second place was also tied with Alistair Meikle and Ian Pearson both finishing in twenty three minutes and forty two seconds.

8th Bill Hamilton 26:19, 9th Andrea Pogson 27:03.

 

This week’s race is another ten mile time trial starting at Abbotsford car park at 7pm.

Cycling Boost for the Borders

Last Wednesday saw a meeting between Scottish Cycling, Borders Regional Council, and local cycling clubs and interested parties. The aim of the meeting was to finalise plans for a cycling partnership in the Borders. The discussions were wide ranging but mostly concentrated on racing development. The partnership will be officially launched at Borders Union show ground in Springwood Park Kelso on 20th of March. As part of the launch Kelso Wheelers are running a series of races on a traffic free circuit. The event will include a series of school children’s races.  Entries are £3 and £4. Entries are available on the day. There will be races for Under 10, under 14 and under 16, any bike in good order will do no racing bike is required. Gala Cycling clubs racing season kicks of on Wednesday March the 31st with a club confined five time trial Starting at Abbotsford starting at 6.30 pm Prompt. This is followed on Sunday by the Gordon Arms Trophy twenty miles Mountain Time Trial. This open race is always well supported attracting entries from all over Scotland and the North of England. This very hilly race provides plenty of opportunities for spectators as it traverses between the Yarrow and Ettrick valleys. Starting at the Gordon Arms on the A708 twelve miles north of Selkirk the race proceeds over the Top Swyer to the Ettrick Valley returning over the Bottom Swyer and back up the Yarrow Valley to the finish at the Gordon Arms.  

 

A reminder that the Sunday Runs Continue. Thanks to David and Graham and occasional others for maintaining the Sunday Run tradition. Well done lads.

Runs leave the old town cross in Galashiels every Sunday at 10am.  Anyone interested in cycling are more than welcome to come along to any of the clubs events.
